BASILIUS BESLER

Basilius Besler (1561–1629) was a respected Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, best known for his monumental Hortus Eystettensis. He realized a fantastic graphic document of cultivated flowers in the most important German garden of its time, the Hortus Eystettensis , unique in its kind by the wide range of flowers. A total of 367 engravings on copper foil Basilius Besler illustrate the spectacular plant diversity of green spaces of the palace of Prince - Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen in Eichstatt, Bavaria ( Germany). The detailed illustrations are distributed according to the four seasons and, following the current classification system , show plants belonging to a total of 90 families and 340 genera . As a whole, the collection is considered one of the finest treasures of botanical literature. The legendary Carl Linnaeus , skilled and eighteenth century zoologist , described as an "incomparable work ".
