Hello community!
I hope everything is great! I wanted to share with you my process to create an illustration for a children illustration contest :) You can see my full project here
Introduction
I created this illustration because I wanted to show the relationship I had with my grandmother and how she made me feel: calm, happy and loved. I thought of a scenario that brings me peace, which was what I felt when she was around me. This scene didn't happen exactly, but I let my imagination lead me to what I wanted to capture.
Materials
I used Procreate to create almost the entire illustration, which is an application that I use a lot and where I have saved all the brushes I use commonly. For final touches I added some texture using Adobe Photoshop.
First Draft
I always start by creating a very basic sketch (like guidelines let's say) to understand where the characters and objects are going to go in the full picture, and thus understand if the composition works. Then I may make adjustments and move elements around, but it helps me have an initial guide and an idea of what the final illustration will approximately look like.
Adding Elements
I start making the illustration with a single color (in the next step I explain the choice of palette). This step helps me clearly see where each element will be located, and I review the composition again to see if it works. I already have an idea in mind of what the characters will look like, and to create the objects I looked for references of antique furniture and decoration from another time.
Color Palette
I wanted to create a melancholic atmosphere, so I chose a palette that takes me to that feeling. I chose 4 colors, the lightest for the background, an intermediate one for the line work, another for coloring along with a last one, which I also used to highlight elements and create certain shadows.
Final Illustration
Last but not least, I always like to add texture to give the illustration more personality and give it a good finish. I did this step in Adobe Photoshop. Added duotone textures to the background and to different elements.
Thank you and until the next post!!
