How I created this pattern

Hello everyone! I hope you are doing great. I wanted to share with you how I created this cozy pattern inspired in Harry Potter series. If you are a fan, you can find the scarf here

As an illustrator, I always enjoy learning new things and trying out new methods for creating illustrations. I really enjoy creating patterns, so this course seemed perfect for trying a different approach. From composition to palette management, I think it's a very enriching course and definitely worth taking.

Tools

I used digital tools (Adobe Illustrator) for this pattern. Although it was created entirely digitally, the idea was for the pattern's shapes to appear more organic, giving it a less structured style.

First step: define subject

Since I'm currently binge-watching the Harry Potter movies 😅🪄, I decided to choose that theme to inspire me to create the figures that would be part of this pattern: characters, elements, animals, architecture. Once I selected a few, I started defining the illustrations.

Second step: creating the elements

Once I defined the theme and which elements would be included, it was time to create them. I liked the idea of creating organic shapes, as if they were paper shapes cut with scissors. I found that more interesting than creating perfect forms.

Third step: selecting the palette

I always find Lauren Wager's book "Palette Perfect" very helpful when choosing palettes (you can find it at this link: https://amzn.to/3KQKAOM). I wanted a palette that evoked the style of the film and a more wintery feel.

Fourth step: composition

The final step is to rearrange the elements and try different compositions.

Fifth step: applying the pattern

Once I defined the composition and the pattern was ready, it was time to apply it to different surfaces. You can find my products in my Etsy shop :) https://rodofileshop.etsy.com You can see more of my work on my Instagram https://www.instagram.com/rodofileillustration Thank you!!
